Gary Hein

US RUGBY HALL of FAME

Co-Captain of the Cal Rugby team, Gary helped Cal win three national championship titles in 1985, 1986, and 1988 and also garnered numerous honors including being named a four-time Collegiate All-American from 1985 -1988. He was named Cal’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1988, and was a two-time Woodley Award winner as the USA Collegiate Player of the year in 1987 and 1988.

Cal Rugby is the most successful of the 30 varsity sports, and is the oldest intercollegiate sport at Cal, spanning 142 years. Gary also played varsity football in his years at Cal.

Gary received his graduate law degree from Oxford University where he was a member of the Rugby team, touring throughout Europe.  As an enthusiastic and dedicated supporter of Rugby at all levels, he has served as assistant coach for the Cal Bears and team coach for the Lamorinda Rugby Football Club’s youth and high school Rugby programs.
